Ovid’s Metamorphoses is a cornerstone of classical literature, demanding an interior layout that balances sweeping narrative momentum with absolute typographic clarity. Mass-market editions often struggle with dense text blocks or awkward line wraps that disrupt the natural cadence of epic poetry and translation.
The objective of this typographic study was to design a timeless, breathable page architecture that honors the weight of classical literature while maintaining rigorous modern compositional standards.
Page Proportions & Trim: Formatted at a classic 5.5" × 8.5" literary trade trim size, optimized for comfortable hand-holding and balanced outer/inner margins (ample gutter space to prevent text distortion in the binding).
Typographic System: Set in Minion Pro (12 pt), chosen for its exceptional versatility, traditional humanist letterforms, and high legibility across long-form narrative spans.
Vertical Grid Lock: Built around a rigid 16 pt Baseline Grid, ensuring absolute horizontal alignment across facing pages and eliminating vertical register drift.
Composition Engine: Configured with Left Justify alignment paired with the Adobe Paragraph Composer enabled, ensuring optimal word spacing and eliminating river gaps or uneven optical spacing across lines.
Running Headers & Folios: Styled in 10 pt small caps, providing a quiet, unobtrusive structural anchor for navigation without competing with the primary text body.
Spread 1: Chapter / Book Opening — Showcasing harmonic negative space, drop cap integration, and clean title hierarchy.
Spread 2: Narrative Text Spread — Demonstrating the 16 pt baseline grid alignment, balanced line lengths (measure), and discreet small-cap running headers.
This project demonstrates advanced competence in long-form classical typesetting, master page grid construction, and complex narrative styling. The resulting document is fully optimized for professional print production, meeting the exact technical pre-flight standards required by university presses and independent literary publishers.
